SOUTHERN ALPS - WINTER TRAMPING by PHIL GREEN
GRADE - MERIT
It was a great idea, to render this image in Monotones, and you have a great range of tones, from pure white through a range of greys, to a true black.Which was the hallmark of Monochrome photography in the good old black and white (only) days. A period in which I cut my teeth. The lead figure is nicely lit and he has a great expression, but he is a little too central in the frame, making the lower right corner with its plain brilliance over-powering. Cropping from the right, and base places the figure in a stronger position, and reduces the area of detail less canvas, yet still leaves an area for the trampers to proceed through. The lovely textures in the tussock and lighting on the ridges add interest to the setting and the appearance that the fog is being left behind, add to a good image. I suiggest a very narrow black border be added to this image, so if it is projected on a white screen, we know where the boundary of the image is.
