Merit. Nice composition has ensured that the large bird has plenty of room to fly into. These birds are extremely difficult to photograph as the huge exposure range challenges the capabilities of the sensor. Thus here, large amounts of the birds’ wings are overexposed with no useable info and smaller parts of the bush are underexposed. Try shooting in Raw, underexposing the birds and then adjust the exposure back in LR/PS etc. However this is a great attempt at a hugely difficult subject. Well done.

Honours. I find myself wanting to watch the main flower open! The photographer has captured lovely detail with good control of the wide tonal range. I find the left hand bud to be distracting, although to me it provides “balance”, so perhaps try defocusing it further and then apply a gentle vignette around the whole image. The contrasting colours and textures are exquisite.

GRADE - NOT ACCEPTED Although this is well composed and well lit and has a clean background the most important aspect ( The Tuis eye is not sharp just a touch out of focus), keep trying you have everything else spot on .

GRADE - MERIT A Good clean Image of a Robin, well exposed and a clean background. Try waiting for the Robin to dig around and pull out some sort of grub or insect this is what can take an image like this to the next level. Weel done.
